Bariatric Surgery: How it Works
Pre-op Procedures - Schedule a Private Consultation
Your surgical weight-loss process begins when you contact our
office staff to schedule a private consultation with a Laparoscopic
Associates doctor. (To do so, please contact
us via email, or by phone, 415-561-1310, or complete our online
registration to be contacted by our staff.) One of our staff
members will interview you to see if you are a candidate for bariatric
surgery and to review insurance coverage questions. Then we will
arrange an appointment with a bariatric surgeon and put you in contact
with our insurance department if necessary.
Devoted to providing you with truly specialized care, a Laparoscopic
Associates surgeon will evaluate your specific weight-condition,
address any of your concerns, and discuss the different bariatric
surgeries that may be right for you.
Pre-op Procedures - Patient Support Options for Bariatric Surgery
In the weeks before undergoing bariatric surgery, you may find our Patient Support Groups helpful. Speaking with others who are anticipating or have already experienced bariatric surgery, you have the opportunity to connect with and learn from others who share your questions and concerns.
For those patients interested in learning more about bariatric surgery for obesity, attending on of our Obesity Surgery Seminars may help provide a more detailed perspective on surgical weight loss.
Want to hear from someone who has experienced bariatric surgery? We encourage
you to Meet Our Patients and/or read one of our Patient
Testimonials.
Undergoing Your Bariatric Surgery Procedure
Having surgery of any kind can be a stressful event in anyone's life, and
we understand the uncertainties that may accompany you to the
hospital the day of your procedure. However, we hope you will
find comfort in the fact that Laparoscopic Associates' doctors
are among the world's most experienced bariatric surgeons, and
the laparoscopic surgery
technique upon which we rely is the safest method for performing
these delicate procedures.
Depending on the specific bariatric
surgery you choose, procedures take anywhere from 45 minutes
to four hours. Most of our weight loss surgeries are laparoscopic.
This technique requires 4-6 small incisions to access the abdominal
cavity. Our expertly-trained surgeons perform the laparoscopic
procedures using long, slender instruments, monitoring their delicate
work with the aid of an advanced camera system that illuminates
the abdominal cavity. Patients with extensive prior abdominal
surgery and or very high body weight may require open surgery.

Post-op: Your Bariatric Surgery Recovery
Because the laparoscopic technique is minimally invasive, patients who undergo bariatric surgery with Laparoscopic Associates recover faster with fewer post-op complications. Most bariatric patients are ready to leave the hospital within a day or two after their operations.
Post-op: Your New Diet After Bariatric Surgery
Adhering to a carefully monitored low-calorie diet is essential to ensuring
your safe recovery and effective weight-loss
results. No matter what procedure you choose, Laparoscopic
Associates will help you design a comprehensive low-calorie meal
plan to meet your changing post-op dietary needs.
