SUCCESS STORY : Janice Gets Her Life Back After the Vertical Gastrectomy
Janice decided to have weight loss surgery with Dr. Jossart in July of
2003. Her BMI was 52. She has struggled with obesity for many years and
was in need of double hip replacement. She had been told that her hips
could not be replaced until she lost a significant amount of weight.
However, Janice was a high risk patient for weight loss surgery because
she had a previous triple heart bypass surgery. Janice decided that the
Restrictive Vertical Gastrectomy would pose the lowest risk to her
health and the greatest benefit to her weight loss. She came through
the surgery with flying colors and after just four months had already
lowered her BMI eight points from 52 to 44. After one year, her BMI was
down to 33 and now 18 months after surgery, her BMI is 30. Janice was
able to have both hips replaced and is doing extremely well after
surgery. She frequently attends the Petaluma support group meeting, see
you next month Janice!

Worried About Post Op Hairloss?
Weightloss surgery
patients can suffer from hairloss, the causes are usually hormonal.
Hormones are stored in fat, when a rapid weight loss occurs, this can
cause thinning hair. Some patients experience it, some don't. If it
does occur, it will usually happen at about 6-9 months post operatively
and cease about 12-18 months out. IT WILL GROW BACK. Here are some
helpful suggestions regarding hairloss: (GNC has a "Hair and Nails"
formula that contains most of these items. )
These Things May Slow or Deter Hair-loss
1. Co-Enzyme Q/10 50mg per day
2. Biotin 300mcg per day
3. Flax Seed Oil 1-2 grams per day, gel-tabs, oil or sprinkles
4. Primrose Oil 1 gel tab per day
5. Zinc 50mg/day
Our online chat is the perfect forum to ask the docs questions
about post operative issues like hairloss. Don't forget to tune into
the chat on Thursday nights (except the last Thursday of the month when
the docs are at the SF support group meeting) at 9pm PST.

Don't Forget to Get Your Yearly Lab Work Done Early!
We are busy gathering yearly lab statistics from our patients. Believe
it or not, the lab where you get your lab work done takes 3-4 weeks to
get us the results of your complicated one year labs. This means that
you should schedule your one year lab tests at least one month before
your one year appointment. Don't forget to stop taking your vitamins 3
days before your annual lab tests. Please see our website or the link
below for an annual lab form. If you cannot download it, call our
offices and speak to Michelle. We appreciate you getting your labs done
on time!
